Education programme at Whitelee Windfarm

At Whitelee Windfarm Visitor Centre we offer an education programme for Early years – S4. Linking to the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) our highly interactive activities promote successful learning by challenging pupils and providing enjoyment through their experiences.  Developed by Glasgow Science Centre, the education programme is a two hour visit, which includes: a workshop, a guided tour of the windfarm and time in our exhibition area

Visits are suitable for a maximum class size of 36 pupils per session, and a minimum of 10 pupils (normal adult/carer ratios apply).

The cost is £3.00 per pupil, with no charge for accompanying adults.

Education visits run Monday to Friday during term time in two sessions: 10:00 to 12:00 or 12:30 to 14:30.  In some circumstances we are able to accommodate larger groups by booking both sessions on the same day.  We have a range of self-led activities that can be utilised if needed, for the additional time.

You can book an education visit from February until December (excluding holidays).

There are 4 different workshops, aimed at different ages and levels.

Wind Works (P5-S4)
This highly engaging workshop allows pupils to investigate the design of wind turbines. The pupils will test four different blade shapes to discover which gives the greatest output of their model wind turbine in the practical investigation.

Electric Detective (P5-S1)
This new workshop looks at circuits and batteries.  We look at conductors and insulators, and test a range of objects.  The pupils then use simple batteries to construct circuits using different number of batteries and investigate the voltage produced.  We also investigate how batteries are used in the renewables sector to store and deliver electricity.

Wind, Rain or Shine (P2-P4)
This fun, engaging and hands-on workshop allows pupils to investigate how we use natural resources to generate electricity. The pupils will investigate three renewable energies; wind, hydro and solar in an interactive practical investigation.
CfE: Science / Planet Earth / Energy Sources and Sustainability; Science / Topical Science.

Watts It All About? (N-P1)
This fun interactive and engaging workshop provides pupils with an introduction to electricity. It explores what we use electricity for, where it comes from and how it gets to ours houses.  We can be flexible with the timings in this workshop to ensure it meets the requirements of your class.

Each visit also includes:

  • Guided Tour
See real turbines up close and feel the power of the wind on our tour of Whitelee. Find out how a turbine works and more about the environment of the windfarm.
  • Exhibition Time
The Visitor Centre has an interactive, hands-on exhibit area that you can explore. Try building your own windfarm, test the power of the wind and take part in our true or false quiz!
