Blackwood Hill Viewpoint: short walk for families
This route is more suited to those looking for a short walk. The viewpoint is located at the top of a small hill so make sure you have enough puff to get up the path at the end! Don’t worry, there are benches to rest on so you catch your breath before your return.
Why take this route?
From Blackwood Hill you can enjoy stunning views on a clear day, stretching to over 80 miles to include Ben Lomond, Ailsa Craig and Arran.
A large bronze toposcope is the centrepiece of the viewpoint, helping you to interpret the scenery in front of you. The toposcope itself is said to be one of the most detailed in the UK, bringing attention to features within areas such as Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, the Ayrshire coast and into the Clyde Valley.
The viewpoint, at the top of a gently winding path, consists of a dry stone dyke enclosing a stone cairn. The design was inspired by the local ruined farmstead of Blackwood Hill Farm. The rustic honesty of the stone work, partnered with the modern curved lines of the wooden benches, gives the whole installation a traditional look with a modern finish. You won’t be disappointed with this trip!
