How many windfarms are there in Scotland/UK?
There are two types of windfarm. An onshore windfarm is one that has been built on land, like Whitelee, and an offshore windfarm is one located out at sea.

In Scotland there are over 70 operational windfarms with only one of these being offshore. There are also nearly 200 that are either under construction, have been given permission to be built or are in the planning stages.

Throughout the whole of the UK there are over 200 operational windfarms with eight of these being offshore. However, there are also more than 450 windfarms that are currently being constructed, have been granted permission to build or are due to be submitted to planning. That’s potentially a lot of renewable energy!

How much electricity does each wind turbine create?
Whitelee's turbines are made by Siemens and they can each produce enough electricity to power the equivelent of over 1,000 homes. Each turbine has a generating capacity of 2.3 megawatts. 
How many households can Whitelee provide electricity to?
Each turbine at Whitelee is capable of producing 2.3 megawatts of power, thats enough to provide power to over 1,000 homes! In total, this means Whitelee can power over 160,000 homes!
What else needs to be done in the future to reduce climate change?
Unfortunately building windfarms will not be enough to completely reduce climate change, but there is more that can be done in the future that will help.

The earth also has lots of other natural renewable resources that can be used to generate electricity. To help reduce climate change we need to support methods of generating energy that are clean, green and renewable.

We also need to work together to reduce the amount of energy we use and this isn’t as difficult as you think.
